Project Objectives :

  • Rehabilitation and Upgrading of Sulemanki Barrage for improving its flow capacity by correcting the river approach to barrage and reduce the water losses through the gates irrigating 2.5 million acres of fertile land of six districts (Pakpattan, Okara, Vehari, Lodhran, Bahawalnagar and Bahawalpur) benefitting about 400,000 farm families .

  • Rehabilitation and Upgrading of Pakpattan Canal, Khadir Branch and PI Link for their safe operation at the designed capacities to achieve equitable distribution of water.

Project Cost :

The project was carried out with the financial assistance of the ADB (USD 73 million) while counterpart fund was provided by the Punjab government (USD 12 / PKR 972 million).

Problems :

  • The Barrage is 85 years old and has deteriorated due to aging and deferred maintenance

  • Upstream masking of the Barrage reducing flood passage capacity

  • Upstream Sheet Piles are not provided

  • Deteriorated Concrete on Barrage Floors

  • Missing Monitoring Facilities

  • Leakage of water from Barrage Gates and cumbersome operation of Gates

  • Old & Damaged deck of Road Bridge

Project Components :

Rehabilitation and Upgrading of Sulemanki Barrage includes:

• Extension of floor and adding upstream sheet piles in the main weir bays for barrage safety;

• Rehabilitation of gates, gearings and hoisting system including gates motorization;

• Repairing of head regulators of the 3 off-taking canals;

• Re-decking of existing bridge across the river; and

• Provision of instrumentation and surveillance cameras for the Barrage and allied structures;

Rehabilitation and Upgrading of Pakpattan Canal, Khadir Branch and P-I Link includes:

• Restoration of canal prism;

• Raising and strengthening of canal banks;

• Rehabilitation/remodeling/reconstruction of structures including head regulator, cross regulators and fall structures;

• Construction of gated cross regulators, head regulators and fall structures on Khadir Branch; and

• Construction of cattle ghats and construction/ renovation of residential and office buildings.

Status :

Project was completed in 2017.
